#73 Results on Robbins Ranch after 3 years of implementing the Total Grazing Program with Adapted Genetics and Selection Guidelines

Hello, I am Jim Elizondo from Real Wealth Ranching where our goal is to help you achieve maximum productivity while improving your land the fastest. Today, I want to share with you the achievements of a student who started applying these online programs 3 years ago.

You may be wondering: how is it that such huge improvements can be achieved with an online course? Or maybe it's hard to believe that we can achieve such great results at a low-cost without chemical fertilizers. This is why I'm going to share with you the results of the Robbins' ranch in Mena, Arkansas. You can also see it with pictures on my Facebook page under Real Wealth Ranching.

Matt and Mark Robbins have applied very well, and with common sense, the teachings of the online courses: the Total Grazing Program and the Adapted Genetics and Selection Guidelines. Last week, when we started the face-to-face course at their farm as the place where we do the practical part, we were able to see how implementing this is working for them. Before this, they had been managing the grazing under selective rotational grazing with a grazing diagram but the results were not what they expected. That's why they took the online courses.

They have not only increased grass production, doubled the area stocking rate, and continue to improve their soils, grassland, and genetics, but also better quality grass thanks to the fact that by grazing with a very good harvest efficiency, a higher leaf-to-stem ratio is achieved in the regrowth. They also comment that it is much easier to manage the cattle under the Total Grazing Program than under other programs they had followed. Their goal is to get to one animal unit per acre in the near future as they already have doubled their stocking rate since starting. Before buying the course, they had been implementing the holistic type of grazing where the results, after two years, turned negative. I explained to the class that this is because they were using selective grazing and not high harvest efficiency grazing that allows you to maintain the high quality of the grass in the green season and defer large areas of the farm to use in the difficult season.

We were able to observe this by visiting the paddocks where they started almost 3 years ago. The soil was spongy and the color of the forages were as if it had been fertilized with synthetic nitrogen. We know that the air we breathe is almost 80% nitrogen, we just need to make it available with a spongy soil and healthy soil life. I must point out that the body condition of all their cattle is excellent and in line with my motto: fat cows, fat cows, fat cows.

I had students from various parts of the USA, an Uruguayan who has a farm in Paraguay in the Chaco and two from Puerto Rico, by the way very friendly and enthusiastic. They also commented to us, Matt and Mark Robbins, that the best quality forage species are being seen in a greater proportion. Then they told us that last year was a drought and even with the drought, they were not forced to sell animals due to lack of food. Hay went up in price three times, so they are very happy with the Total Grazing Program that allow them to defer paddocks in the green season to use them when there is no grass or hay available in the area.

We were also able to observe a lot of new plants from the 4 native and tall types of grasses of the North American plain, this is very favorable since they produce more quantity and quality than the introduced grasses, little bluestem, tall bluestem, Indian grass and switch grass. We need to remember that young seedlings of our best forage species need time to grow strong roots and not be pulled out with their roots by cattle returning to re-graze which happens under any type of rotational grazing at high stocking rates which are necessary for maximum productivity and soil health.

Regarding Adapted Genetics, thank God they had been creating a compound with the Mashona breed for some time. The Mashona has great nutritional adaptation and we were able to observe excellent animals. Especially a pure Mashona Bull, number 488 that I had chosen in Texas as the best of 25 when he was a year old. It was my surprise to find him here, already an adult and with an enviable phenotype for any breed. They didn't know that I had raised him, so I showed them the photographs from when the bull was only one year old, and to my surprise, when I called out to him in Spanish, he recognized me and came to sniff my hand. As a comment, all their cattle are very tame and they approached us instead of running away, that is a testament to their good management of cattle with very low stress.

They have been able to observe that this bull helps them improve udders and other important traits in their cows because they started like everyone else, with limousin with gelbvieh, and with Angus cows, all European bos taurus of which they only have 3 left because they have tall fescue which can be toxic due to the endophyte fungus that it contains. The Mashona are very resistant to heat and to this endophyte, so the Mashona half-blood herd does not suffer from any problems and they can have their calving season at the time of year when the pastures produce in abundance, Spring.

They are also doing excellent things on the nutrition side. They have been experimenting with giving cattle a special Sea-90 sea salt brine that has gotten rid of pink eye and white scours in calves. I observed that their cattle are very healthy and shiny, I observed good vitality in cows, bulls, and calves with very good body condition.

For the optimum calving season, I suggested they start a little earlier, and gradually move the breeding season 14 days earlier per year, so that their cows can take better advantage of the green season since May would already be late at this latitude and altitude. Be careful, this can be done as they already have a herd of well-adapted cows with superb genetics and especially with great nutritional adaptation that as we saw in last week's class is a requirement to obtain better results.

The Robbins are excellent people, with a very good ranch, correctly implementing the Total Grazing Program and with enviable genetics, since they already export semen from that pure Mashona Bull to Australia and thus help other ranchers anywhere in the world.

Resultados Después de 3 Anios de Implementar mis Consejos en la Finca

Tal vez te preguntes: cómo es que con un curso en línea se pueden lograr tales avances? O tal vez sea difícil de creer que logramos tan buenos resultados a muy bajo costo sin fertilizantes químicos,  y por eso es que voy a compartir contigo los logros de Robbins ranch en Mena, Arkansas. Matt y Mark Robbins han aplicado muy bien, y con sentido común, las enseñanzas de los cursos en línea, Programa de Pastoreo Total y el de Genética Adaptada y guías de selección.

La semana pasada que empezamos el curso presencial con su finca como el lugar en donde hacemos la parte práctica, pudimos observar como les esta funcionando el implementar esto.

Antes de esto, ellos habían estado manejando el pastoreo rotacional selectivo con un diagrama de pastoreo pero los resultados no fueron lo que esperaban. Por eso es que tomaron el curso en línea.

No solo han aumentado la producción de pasto, sino también pasto de mejor calidad gracias que al hacer un pastoreo con muy buena eficiencia de cosecha, se logra una mayor relación hoja a tallo en el rebrote. También comentan que es mucho más fácil manejar el ganado bajo el programa de pastoreo total que bajo otros programas que habían seguido. Antes de comprar el curso ellos habían estado implementando el tipo holístico del pastoreo en donde los resultados, después de dos años, se volvieron negativos. Les explique que eso se debe a que hacían un pastoreo selectivo y no un pastoreo de alta eficiencia de cosecha que te permite mantener la alta calidad del pasto en la época verde y diferir grandes áreas de la finca para su uso en la época difícil.

Pudimos observar esto al ir a visitar los potreros en donde empezaron hace ya casi 3 años. Debo resaltar que la condición corporal de todo su ganado es excelente y va de acuerdo con mi lema: vacas gorditas, vacas gorditas, vacas gorditas.

Tuve estudiantes de varias partes de USA, un Uruguayo que tiene finca en Paraguay en el chaco y dos de Puerto Rico, por cierto muy amables y entusiastas.

También nos comentaron, Matt y Mark Robbins como los pastos de mejor calidad se están viendo en mayor proporción. Luego nos comentaron que el año pasado fue de sequía y aun asi no fueron obligados a vender animales por falta de comida.

El heno llegó a subir de precio tres veces lo que costaba por lo que están muy contentos con el Programa de Pastoreo Total que les permite diferir potreros en la época verde para usarlos cuando no hay pasto disponible en la zona.

También pudimos observar mucha planta de los 4 pastos nativos y altos de la planicie norteamericana, esto es muy favorable pues producen más cantidad y calidad que los pastos introducidos.

En cuanto a genética adaptada, gracias a Dios ellos ya llevaban tiempo creando un compuesto con la raza Mashona que tiene gran adaptación nutricional y pudimos observar animales excelentes.

En especial un Toro Mashona puro, número 488 que yo había escogido en Texas como el mejor de 25, cuando tenía un año.

Grande fue mi sorpresa al encontrarlo aquí, ya adulto y con una estampa envidiable para cualquier raza.

Ellos no sabían que yo lo había criado, entonces les mostré las fotografías de cuando el toro tenía solo un anio, y para sorpresa mía, cuando lo llame en español, me reconoció y vino a olfatear mi mano. Como comentario, todo su ganado es muy manso y se acercan nosotros en vez de huir, eso es testimonio de su buen manejo del ganado bajo estrés.

Ellos han podido observar que este toro les ayuda a mejorar ubres y otros rasgos importantes en sus vacas pues empezaron como todos, con limusin con gelbvieh, y con vacas Angus de las cuales solo les quedan 3 pues tienen festuca elevada la cual puede ser tóxica por un hongo endófito que contiene. El mashona es muy resistente al calor y a ese hongo endófito por lo que el rebaño media sangre mashona no sufre ningún problema y pueden tener su temporada de partos en la época del año que los pastos producen en abundancia.

También por el lado de la nutrición están haciendo bien las cosas.

Han estado experimentando con darle al ganado una sal de mar especial Sea-90 que les ha quitado el problema del ojo rosado y el de diarreas blancas en los becerros. Vi su ganado muy sano y brilloso, observe buena vitalidad en vacas, Toros y becerras con muy buena condición corporal.

La temporada óptima de partos, ahí sí les sugiero empezar un poco antes, gradualmente mover el empadre 14 días más temprano por año, para que puedan aprovechar mejor la temporada verde pues Mayo ya seria muy tarde en esta latitud y altitud. Ojo, esto porque ya cuentan con un hato de vacas bien adaptadas y especialmente con gran adaptación nutricional que vimos la semana pasada es requisito para obtener mejores resultados.

Los Robbins son muy buenas personas, con un muy buen rancho, implementando correctamente el programa de pastoreo total y con una genética envidiable pues ya exportan semen de ese Toro Mashona puro hasta Australia y así ayudan a otros ganaderos de cualquier parte del mundo.

5.  Al mismo tiempo que se implementa el programa de pastoreo total sugiero se empiece a trabajar en la genética, principalmente por el lado de los toros, y así empezar a mejorar nuestro ganado desde las primeras crías nacidas.
