#28 Benefits of Total grazing in Smaller Scale Operations | Beneficios del Pastoreo Total en Fincas Pequeñas

Hello, I'm Jim Elizondo from Real Wealth Ranching where we focus on helping ranchers and farmers to improve their land the fastest while maximizing their profitability.

Recently, I have been receiving many questions regarding smaller scale operations and Total Grazing.

In fact, some of my Total Grazing students run smaller scale operations so I wanted to create this episode to clarify a few doubts that you may have if you have a small operation and are very interested in Total Grazing.

You see, it is not only about the benefits that you will have in productivity but the importance of improving your land.

We need to realize that soil and individual plants, humus creation and future productivity reacts to management exactly the same on large as on small farms. The principles are exactly the same and as a very large cattle producer told me: anything can be scaled up or down with success. All we need to remember is to apply the fundamental principles to our unique environment which includes scale.

In my youth I started doing beyond organic production on a very small scale with rabbits and a vegetable garden, learning to make good compost since I was 15 years old. I had a mentor, Mr. Parks, who was our neighbor, and learned a lot from him. The droppings of my rabbits were used to make compost with grass leaves after mowing the yard and I had to learn to do all the vegetable growing without chemicals as I wasn’t allowed to use them. That started my lifelong love with biology and live organisms and ecosystem.

After graduating from college as an Agronomist Engineer I knew I could replicate this but with the help of larger animals: cows and sheep, that impact the soil much better, and started doing this in 1990 on a larger scale.

 My message to you is that you do not need to have a large-scale farm to do what you love and know is good for the environment, your health, and your soil.

We need to remember how humus is formed and how soil microorganisms benefit from having something green and growing for the largest part of the year to feed them via root exudates, we also need to remember the huge impact of trees on our environment. So even if you only have half an acre or thousands of acres, the fundamental principles are the same. 

1. Humus is our soil’s real fertility and is what makes new land produce more, but with conventional agriculture and livestock we end up mining it without realizing it.

As humus lasts around 100 years we have been enjoying what was built up by soil microorganisms a long time ago, microorganisms which in turn are converted into humus, this is how up to 80% of humus is formed. This also means that humus is the most important component of your soil!

Do not limit yourself by thinking your property is too small, of course, you need to decide if your property will grow with time, if you want to lease more land, or if you prefer to stay at that scale. There is nothing wrong with improving your land with livestock even if you can only have rabbits or sheep or pigs or poultry.

2. Understand how humus is formed and learn how to create more of it.

Humus is the stable degraded fraction of organic matter that cannot be further degraded by the action of microorganisms, it is our soil’s real fertility, gives our soil the dark brown color and good earthy smell, it also provides nutrients, and moisture, and a place for microorganisms to thrive. It also buffers salts, chemicals, and pH extremes. This means it is fundamental that you know how humus is formed and you create more of it for even higher quality and yield in your land regardless of scale.

Not all organic matter is humus, for example, a good compost must have above 3% of humus to be considered good.

When your humus increases your land reacts to it as if it started to rain more and you fertilized it. This is very fast to observe and the first step is to stop the use of chemicals, including synthetic fertilizers in the soil as they kill or inhibit the very necessary mycorrhiza whose job is to help your plants explore up to 100 times more area and to help with the uptake of unavailable phosphorous.

Up to 80% of humus is created via root exudates which contain energy to feed the microorganisms which, besides making the soil nutrients available to plants, are themselves digested by other microorganisms and eventually converted to humus with the final digestion being carried out by fungi.

So we see that litter and organic refuse are not very effective at creating the humus fraction that lasts over 100 years. But doing a total grazing program does increase your humus very fast as the leaves produce energy through photosynthesis while the stems consume energy through respiring. The difference between these two, photosynthesis and respiring is the energy left for production and for feeding the microorganisms around the plant roots for higher productivity and humus formation. It is a virtuous cycle! 

And it is how nature functions, if we think about it we know that natural forests and grasslands do not require chemicals or fertilizers and yet are highly fertile!

I have experienced this throughout my life but only around 6 years ago the science came up with the research that proves this. 3. Trees

Trees are essential for the maximum resiliency of our land, regardless of scale, as they help to draw wildlife like birds and others to our land. They can also provide shade and windbreak for men and beast and if planned properly they can provide fruit, nuts, and a haven for soil microorganisms.

Around 30% of the area would be optimal to have in good forage or fruit-producing trees. There are many species to fit any environment so believing trees are not for you is not an option.

I say this because I have visited farms and ranches where they claim trees cannot grow there even though there are trees growing on their neighbor's land.

4. Another option for all is to create a food forest on a small area, maybe half an acre, and integrate poultry and pigs in it.

This has the advantage of requiring very little effort and provides a continuous supply of food if planned correctly for your unique environment.

I suggest creating a small food forest for large-scale properties and for small-scale properties. It is very satisfying!

5. Using animals to harvest the energy produced by photosynthesis through good total grazing management makes life so much easier than doing the work ourselves.

This works at small-scale and at very large scale as our main goal is to create strong and fat roots and more desirable plants per square yard to allow even more humus to be created while maximizing your production and stocking rate.

My Total Grazing students know this and they know that by implementing the Total Grazing online course program they will have a leafier pasture with much higher humus production and a stockpiled reserve in area to feed their livestock through the winter or dry season, this is important not only to save on hay feeding but also to improve your soil humus faster. They also know they can plant fodder trees to feed their livestock in the difficult times of the year.

When your plants grow in soil with high humus they have higher quality and your livestock will reflect that while at the same time you will be healthier by consuming such produce. The much higher fatty acids like omega 3 in the meat and milk from grass feed livestock will help your health while the CLA in them will help prevent cancer.

It is not scale that prevents us to achieve these great results in our life, we need to go out and start with what we can and achieve real wealth in our lives.

Remember, without good health, money and time are worthless. We need good health first.

I believe in using low-cost biological methods and never to use poisons on the land and animals. We must strive to be the best stewards of the land we can be.

De hecho, algunos de mis estudiantes de pastoreo total tienen fincas de menor escala y quise crear este podcast para aclarar algunas dudas que tu puedas tener si tienes una finca pequeña y estas muy interesado en el Pastoreo Total.

Me explico, no es solo sobre los beneficios que vas a tener en mayor productividad sino en la importancia de mejorar tu suelo.

Necesitamos darnos cuenta de que el suelo y las plantas individuales, la creación de humus y la productividad futura de nuestro suelo reaccionan al manejo exactamente de la misma manera en las fincas grandes que en las pequeñas. Los principios son exactamente los mismos y, como me dijo un productor muy grande de ganado: cualquier cosa se puede hacer en grande o en pequeño con éxito. Todo lo que necesitamos recordar es aplicar los principios fundamentales a nuestro entorno único que incluye la escala.

En mi juventud, de adolescente, comencé a hacer producción más allá de orgánica a muy pequeña escala con conejos y una huerta de vegetales y árboles frutales, aprendiendo a hacer una buena composta desde los 15 años. Tuve un mentor, el Sr. Don Pancho Parks, que era nuestro vecino y aprendí mucho de él. Los excrementos de mis conejos los usaba para hacer composta revuelto con hojas del pasto que quedaba después de cortar el césped y tuve que aprender a hacer todo el cultivo de verduras sin químicos ya que no se me estaba permitido usarlos. Así empezó mi pasión de por vida por la tierra con la biología y los organismos vivos.

Después de graduarme de la universidad como ingeniero agrónomo zootecnista, supe que podía replicar esto pero con la ayuda de animales más grandes: vacas y ovejas que impactan mejor el suelo y comencé a hacer esto en 1990 a mayor escala.

Mi mensaje para ti es que no necesitas tener una finca a gran escala para hacer lo que amas y sabes que es bueno para el medio ambiente, tu salud y tu suelo.

Necesitamos recordar cómo se forma el humus y cómo los microorganismos del suelo se benefician de tener algo.

Verde y creciendo durante la mayor parte del año, también debemos recordar el gran impacto de los árboles en nuestro medio ambiente. Entonces, incluso si solo tienes un cuarto de hectárea o miles de hectáreas, los principios fundamentales son los mismos.

1. El humus es la verdadera fertilidad de nuestros suelos y es lo que hace productiva la tierra recién desmontada, pero con la agricultura y ganadería convencional terminan con el sin darse cuenta.

Como el humus dura alrededor de 100 años hemos estado usando lo que se creó por los microorganismos del suelo hace mucho tiempo, microorganismos que a su vez son convertidos en humus, asi es como hasta un 80% del humus es creado. Esto también significa que el humus es el componente más importante de tu suelo!

No te límites a pensar que tu propiedad es demasiado pequeña, por supuesto que debes decidir si tu propiedad crecerá con el tiempo, si deseas arrendar más terrenos o si prefieres quedarte en esa escala. No hay nada de malo en mejorar tu tierra con ganado aunque sea pequeña, incluso si solo puedes tener conejos, ovejas, cerdos o aves de corral.

2. Comprender cómo se forma el humus y aprende a crear más.

El humus es la fracción degradada estable de la materia orgánica que no puede degradarse más por la acción de los microorganismos, es la verdadera fertilidad de nuestro suelo, le da a nuestro suelo el color café oscuro y el buen olor a tierra, también proporciona nutrientes, humedad y un lugar para los microorganismos para prosperar. También buferiza las sales, los productos químicos y los extremos de pH. Esto significa que es fundamental que sepas cómo se forma el humus y que produzcas más para obtener una calidad y un rendimiento aún mayores en tu tierra, independientemente de la escala.

No toda la materia orgánica es humus, por ejemplo una buena composta debe tener más del 3% de humus para ser considerada buena.

Cuando tu % de humus aumenta, tu tierra reacciona como si empezara a llover más y la fertilizaras. Esto es muy rápido de observar y el primer paso es evitar el uso de productos químicos, incluidos los fertilizantes sintéticos en el suelo, ya que matan o inhiben la muy necesaria micorriza, cuyo trabajo es ayudar a tus plantas a explorar hasta 100 veces más área y ayudar con la absorción de fósforo no disponible.

Hasta el 80% del humus se crea a través de los exudados de las raíces que contienen energía para alimentar a los microorganismos que, además de volver los nutrientes del suelo disponibles para las plantas, son a su vez digeridos por otros microorganismos por varias generaciones y finalmente se convierten en humus siendo la digestión final realizada por los hongos.

Entonces vemos que el mantillo o residuo y los desechos orgánicos no son muy efectivos para crear la fracción de humus que dura más de 100 años. Pero el hacer un programa de pastoreo total aumenta tu humus muy rápido ya que las hojas producen energía a través de la fotosíntesis mientras que los tallos consumen energía a través de la respiración. La diferencia entre estos dos, la fotosíntesis y la respiración, es la energía que queda para la producción y para alimentar a los microorganismos alrededor de las raíces de las plantas para una mayor productividad y formación de humus. ¡Es un círculo virtuoso! 

Y así es como funciona la naturaleza, si pensamos en ello sabemos que los bosques y pastizales naturales no requieren de químicos ni fertilizantes y sin embargo ¡son altamente fértiles!

3. Árboles

Los árboles son esenciales para la máxima resiliencia de nuestra tierra, independientemente de la escala, ya que ayudan a atraer vida silvestre como pájaros y otros a nuestra tierra. También pueden proporcionar sombra y protección contra el viento para los hombres y las bestias y, si se planifican adecuadamente, pueden proporcionar frutas, nueces y un refugio para los microorganismos del suelo.

Alrededor del 30% del área sería óptima cubrir con buenos árboles productores de forraje o frutales. Hay muchas especies que se adaptan a cualquier entorno, por lo que creer que los árboles no son para ti no es una opción.

Digo esto porque he visitado fincas donde afirman que los árboles no pueden crecer allí a pesar de que hay árboles que crecen en las tierras de sus vecinos.

4. Otra opción para todos es crear un bosque de alimentos en un área pequeña, tal vez un cuarto de hectárea, e integrar aves y cerdos en él. Esto tiene la ventaja de que requiere muy poco esfuerzo y proporciona un suministro continuo de alimentos si se planifica correctamente para tu ambiente único.

Sugiero crear un pequeño bosque de alimentos para propiedades a gran escala y para propiedades a pequeña escala. ¡Es muy satisfactorio!

5. Usar animales para cosechar la energía producida por la fotosíntesis a través de un buen manejo del pastoreo total hace que la vida sea mucho más fácil que hacer el trabajo nosotros mismos. Esto funciona a pequeña escala y a muy grande escala ya que nuestra meta principal es crear raíces fuertes y gordas para crear lograr que más humus sea creado mientras maximizamos la producción y la carga animal.

Mis estudiantes de pastoreo total saben esto y saben que al implementar el programa del curso en línea de pastoreo total tendrán un pasto con más hoja con una producción de humus mucho mayor y una reserva de pasto diferido en área para alimentar a su ganado durante el invierno o la estación seca. También saben que pueden plantar árboles forrajeros para alimentar a su ganado en las épocas difíciles del año.

Cuando tus plantas crecen en un suelo con alto contenido de humus, tienen una mayor calidad y la salud de tu ganado lo reflejará, mientras que al mismo tiempo estarás más saludable al consumir dichos productos. Los ácidos grasos mucho más altos como el omega 3 en la carne y la leche del ganado alimentado con pasto ayudarán a tu salud, mientras que el CLA en ellos ayudará a prevenir el cáncer.

No es la escala lo que nos impide lograr estos grandes resultados en nuestra vida, necesitamos salir y comenzar con lo que podamos y lograr la verdadera riqueza en nuestras vidas.

Recuerda, sin salud, el dinero y el tiempo no valen nada. Necesitamos buena salud por sobre todas las cosas.

Creo en usar métodos biológicos de bajo costo y nunca usar venenos en la tierra y los animales. Debemos esforzarnos por ser los mejores administradores de la tierra que podamos ser.
