#26 Graze Your Farms Grasses with No or Less Inputs

Hello, I am Jaime Elizondo from Real Wealth Ranching and today I am going to tell you my experiences with feeding your livestock mainly from the grasses and forages you grow on your own farm or ranch. This is essential to make you self-sufficient in these uncertain times, work less, insulate your property from high prices of inputs and improve your soil faster.

Welcome back to another episode of Fat Cows, Fat Wallet podcasts. I hope you are well and enjoying the day, today I am going to tell you about how to feed your livestock from grasses and forages produced on your own farm as much as possible.

When we are mostly self-sufficient and are able to do without expensive purchased inputs we become independent of high-priced inputs that are going up every day. At least that is how it feels!

I had to learn this very early in my ranching career and it is the main reason I do not use any chemicals or synthetic fertilizers as they were too expensive to allow to make a profit. This was before I knew exactly how much damage they do to soil life!

Using more of what you produce, grass and forages, and less of what you need to buy, hay and supplements, means that you can keep that money in your pocket, so to say.

Now, we do not want to shoot ourselves in the foot by trying to starve a profit into your farm but you can surely optimize using what your farm or ranch naturally provides through the year and that is your green forage.

And to top it off, green forage is grazed directly by your livestock so no other intervention is necessary, like the diesel using machinery needed when you make hay or silage.

The less intervention on our part between the forage you produce and your livestock consuming it the more efficient its use will be and the more money it will make you. But, did you know that practicing direct grazing as much as possible also improves your land the fastest?

Knowing what I am going to show you will help you to make your farm or ranch more profitable and, above all to enjoy more time with your family.

Ever wondered what would happen if you utilized more of the grass that you produce on your own land?

I know it may seem scary to harvest more of your forage, but it is the best way to improve your land while maximizing your profitability.

Let’s start with harvest efficiency when your livestock graze.

When we talk about harvesting corn grain we want to harvest as much as possible, leaving the least amount as a percentage in the ground. 

Why? Because it makes economic sense!

So what happens when we graze? Do we try to achieve the highest harvest efficiency possible? Or do we allow our livestock to select the best and leave the rest as is widely taught by others?

We need to realize that grazing only the tops and the best forage species weakens them and the regrowth is less vigorous than if grazed at a high grazing efficiency of around 80-90% which allows your livestock to go through your land much more slowly and gives a longer rest period for roots to grow strong and fat. By doing total grazing, your yearly production is enhanced with the longer rest periods and that allows you to increase your stocking rate which determines profitability and soil improvement.

This also allows your grasses growing points, which are close to the ground, to receive sunlight as the shade of the residual from selectively grazed grass kills these growing points and leads to wider interplant spacings.

That is why selective grazing, even when doing rotations, will lead to overgrazing which means returning to regraze an individual plant before it has fully recovered. Due to profits being driven by the number of productive animals we can maintain per farm per year stocking rate becomes very important.

Doing a high harvest efficiency grazing, what I call total grazing, allows your livestock herd or flock to move slower across your property.

That would allow a longer rest period to your forages, it will also allow your desirable species to compete better with the undesirable species and will allow you to defer whole paddocks as standing hay for difficult times, be them Winter, Summer slump, or dry season.

And even more important, this will allow your forages to be leafier!

A leafy plant has more energy than a stemmy plant and the more leaf that you can produce per square yard the better your solar panel is!

A larger solar panel means more energy produced per acre to feed your animals, and your soil, as the soil life is fed carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis via root exudates.

We know, by studying plant physiology, that grasses and forages need a periodic complete grazing to remove tall vegetation and allow sunlight to reach their growing points and new seedlings which are close to the ground. We also know now that thanks to photosynthesis the plant creates carbohydrates which feed the soil microorganisms which in turn make nutrients available to the plant.

Now, would your grass be more resilient to dry conditions with the stronger and fatter roots this longer rest period gives? This is a very important question. Think about it, I will say it again, would your grass be more resilient to dry conditions with the stronger and fatter roots this longer rest period gives? You will be increasing your organic matter, increasing humus which retains water. The energy in your grassroots will be very high. This is extremely important during a drought, to have strong and fat roots that your grass can depend on.

But how do we keep quality up when our grass is growing very fast, like in the Spring. We surely cannot go over the whole farm doing total grazing as it will take too long, and our first paddock will get overmature.

Besides, we want to save money on hay or silage to feed our animals in the difficult times, Winter or dry season.

That is why I teach to stockpile in the area so that you can keep your livestock grazing even in those difficult times.

This will need new knowledge and sometimes, depending on the environment, a small amount of a high protein supplement to allow the rumen to digest the higher fiber and lower protein stockpiled grass.

By doing this you will not only improve your land through the recycling of nutrients, dung, and urine but also save big time on hay. Around 2 to 300 dollars per cow equivalent per year!

Now, let’s get to the fun part. How can you start?

I suggest starting with step number one which is to do a daily move and aim for the highest harvest efficiency possible without your livestock losing body condition.

The main goal is to harvest more of what you already have available to allow a longer rest period for your whole land. This is step number one and as you master it you can progress to fine-tune the next steps which will allow you to create a much more resilient farm or ranch which will be a pleasure to manage!

Just by doing this simple step, more complete grazing, you will avoid overgrazing, which is best defined as re-grazing a plant before it has fully recovered. Avoiding overgrazing is fundamental for higher grass productivity, and soil improvement! In the Total grazing program, we avoid overgrazing!

We need to change our way of thinking, when we allow our livestock to do selective grazing, they select the most palatable species and then we move them to a new paddock to repeat the process.

Conclusion and summary

To feed from grasses produced in the farm as much as possible we need to minimize using a machine to harvest it, to feed it later, and to graze it, at the right stage, in the green season doing total grazing, this will allow you to stockpile in area other parts of your land to maintain grass quality high in the green season for your animals to gain weight and put on good body condition. Then they will do total grazing once the green season ends, in the stockpiled area. Doing this will allow you to utilize with better efficiency the grass you produce through your livestock and to turn it into saleable products. It sounds easy and once you get the hang of it everything will flow; it really is the best way to maximize your productivity to enjoy a good life in the country!

Cuando somos principalmente autosuficientes y podemos prescindir de los costosos insumos comprados, nos volvemos independientes de los insumos de alto precio que aumentan todos los días. ¡Al menos así se siente últimamente!

Tuve que aprender esto muy pronto en mi carrera ganadera y es la razón principal por la que no utilizo productos químicos ni fertilizantes sintéticos, ya que eran demasiado caros para permitir obtener ganancias. ¡Esto fue antes de que supiera exactamente cuánto daño le hacen a la vida del suelo!

Usar más de lo que produce, pasto y forrajes, y menos de lo que se necesita comprar, heno y suplementos, significa que puede mantener ese dinero en su bolsillo, por así decirlo.

Ahora, no queremos pegarnos un tiro en el pie al tratar de reducir tanto los gastos que bajen las ganancias a su finca, pero seguramente puede optimizar esa ganancia usando lo que su finca o rancho produce naturalmente durante el año y ese es su forraje verde.

Y además, forraje verde que pasta directamente tu ganado para que no sea necesaria ninguna otra intervención, como la maquinaria que consume diesel que necesitas cuando haces heno o ensilaje.

Cuanta menos intervención, por nuestra parte, entre el forraje que se produce y su ganado que lo consume, más eficiente será su uso y más dinero le hará ganar. Pero, ¿sabías que practicar el pastoreo directo en la medida de lo posible también mejora más rápido tu terreno?

Saber lo que te voy a mostrar te ayudará a mejorar la rentabilidad de tu finca y, sobre todo, a disfrutar más tiempo con tu familia.

¿Alguna vez se preguntó qué pasaría si utilizara más del pasto que produce en su propia tierra?

Sé que puede parecer aterrador cosechar más forraje, pero es la mejor manera de mejorar su tierra y maximizar su rentabilidad.

Comencemos con la eficiencia de la cosecha cuando su ganado pastorea

Si hablamos de cosechar maíz en grano queremos cosechar lo más posible, dejando la menor cantidad en porcentaje en el suelo.

¿Por qué? ¡Porque tiene sentido económico!

Entonces, ¿qué sucede cuando pastoreamos? ¿Tratamos de lograr la mayor eficiencia de cosecha posible? ¿O permitimos que nuestro ganado seleccione lo mejor dejando el resto como lo enseñan otros?

Debemos darnos cuenta de que el pastorear solo las puntas y las mejores especies forrajeras las debilita y el rebrote es menos vigoroso que si se pastorea con una alta eficiencia de cosecha de alrededor del 80-90%, lo que permite que tu ganado avance por tu terreno mucho más lentamente y da un período de descanso más largo para que las raíces crezcan fuertes y gordas. Haciendo pastoreo total tu producción anual se potencia con los periodos de descanso más largos y eso te permite aumentar tu carga animal lo que determina la rentabilidad y la mejora del suelo.

Esto también permite que los puntos de crecimiento de los pastos, que están cerca del suelo, reciban la luz del sol, ya que la sombra de los residuos del pasto pastoreado selectivamente mata estos puntos de crecimiento y conduce a espacios más amplios entre plantas.

Es por eso que el pastoreo selectivo, incluso cuando se realizan rotaciones, conducirá a un sobrepastoreo, lo que significa volver a pastorear una planta individual antes de que se haya recuperado por completo. Debido a que las ganancias son impulsadas por la cantidad de animales productivos que podemos mantener por granja por año, la carga animal se vuelve muy importante.

Hacer un pastoreo de alta eficiencia de cosecha, lo que yo llamo pastoreo total, permite que tu rebaño o manada de ganado se mueva más lentamente a través de tu propiedad.
Eso permitirá un período de descanso más largo para tus forrajes, también permitiría que tus especies deseables compitan mejor con las especies indeseables y le permitiría diferir potreros enteros como heno en pie para usar en los tiempos difíciles, ya sea invierno, verano o estación seca.
Y aún más importante, ¡esto permitirá que sus pastos tengan más hoja!

¡Una planta con mucha hoja tiene más energía que una planta con mucho tallo y cuantas más hojas pueda producir por metro cuadrado, mejor será su panel solar!

Un panel solar más grande significa más energía producida por hectárea para alimentar a sus animales y su suelo, ya que la vida del suelo se alimenta de carbohidratos producidos por la fotosíntesis a través de los exudados de las raíces.

Sabemos, por el estudio de la fisiología de las plantas, que las gramíneas y los forrajes necesitan un pastoreo completo periódico para quitar los residuos altos y permitir que la luz del sol alcance sus puntos de crecimiento y las nuevas plántulas que están cerca del suelo. También sabemos ahora que gracias a la fotosíntesis la planta crea carbohidratos que alimentan a los microorganismos del suelo vía exudados de las raíces, que a su vez vuelven los nutrientes a disponibles para de planta.

Ahora, ¿sería tu pasto más resistente a las condiciones secas con raíces más fuertes y gordas que proporciona este período de descanso más largo? Esta es una pregunta muy importante. Piénsalo, lo diré de nuevo, ¿sería tu pasto más resistente a las condiciones secas con las raíces más fuertes y gordas que proporciona este período de descanso más prolongado? Estarás aumentando tu materia orgánica, aumentando el humus que retiene el agua. La energía en sus macollos será muy alta. Por eso enseño a diferir en zonas para que puedas mantener tu ganado pastando aún en esas épocas difíciles.

Esto requerirá nuevos conocimientos y, a veces, dependiendo del ambiente, una pequeña cantidad de un suplemento alto en proteínas para permitir que el rumen digiera el pasto diferido con mayor cantidad de fibra y menor proteína.

Al hacer esto, no solo mejorará tu tierra a través del reciclaje de nutrientes, estiércol y orina, sino que también ahorrarás mucho en heno. ¡Alrededor de 2 a 300 dólares por vaca equivalente por año!

Ahora, vayamos a la parte divertida. ¿Cómo puedes empezar?

Sugiero comenzar con el paso número uno, que es hacer un movimiento diario y apuntar a la mayor eficiencia de cosecha posible sin que tu ganado pierda condición corporal.

Necesitamos cambiar nuestra forma de pensar, cuando permitimos que nuestro ganado haga pastoreo selectivo, seleccionan las especies más apetecibles y luego las trasladamos a un nuevo potrero para repetir el proceso lo que reduce la productividad potencial.

Conclusión y resumen

Para alimentar a nuestro ganado de los pastos producidos en la granja tanto como sea posible, debemos minimizar el uso de la maquinaria para cosecharlo, y darlo más tarde y pastorearlo, en la etapa correcta, en la estación verde haciendo pastoreo total, esto te permitirá para diferir en área otras partes de tu finca para mantener alta la calidad del pasto en la temporada verde para que tus animales aumenten de peso y adquieran una buena condición corporal. Luego harán pastoreo total una vez finalizada la temporada verde, en el área diferida. Hacer esto te permitirá utilizar con mayor eficiencia el pasto que produces a través de tu ganado y convertirlo en productos vendibles. Suena fácil y una vez que lo domines todo fluirá; ¡realmente es la mejor manera de maximizar su productividad para disfrutar de una buena vida en el campo!
