#23 5 Tips to Eliminate Synthetic Fertilizers | Fertilizantes Foliares para Reducir Costos

Welcome back to another episode of Fat cows, Fat Wallet podcast. I hope you are well and enjoying your day. Today I want to talk to you about how to reduce and eventually eliminate the need to use synthetic fertilizers by using instead foliar fertilizers that cost a fraction of the fertilizer applied to the soil and do not harm soil life. This is very important because if we continue to apply synthetic fertilizers to the soil, the plant is not fed naturally and the soil micro-organisms around the roots become lazy so to speak and stop doing their job of making nutrients available! Nutrients not available from the soil!

The green revolution and cheap fossil fuel made producers forget about traditional methods of production with low external inputs. The goal, step from maximum profitability to maximum productivity. What happened to us? What happened to common sense and economy? How did we not realize that by applying synthetic fertilizers we are damaging our land and its life?

Now I have learned and unlearned, this is what happens when one graduates as a Zootechnical Agricultural Engineer and is confronted with reality in the field. After more than 30 years of experience, I can assure you that the use of synthetic fertilizers is not necessary.

We just need to understand how the ruminant-pasture-land symbiosis works and manage the grazing of our cattle. If we ever need to speed up this virtuous cycle we can do it and I'll tell you how.

Due to the disproportionate increase in the price of synthetic fertilizers, it is difficult to apply them and earn money, even in reduced doses.

If you want to earn money and not be a victim of what is happening, I recommend that you listen carefully.
You should know that if you stop applying synthetic fertilizers without taking any other action, your fields will turn yellow due to the lack of life in the soil. How do I know this? It happened to me! When I saw that synthetic fertilizers, back in 1991, were damaging soil life, I stopped using them and my fields, which were already addicted to synthetic fertilizers, turned yellow and greatly decreased in productivity for three years. I do not want that to happen to you and that is why I am going to give you the way to avoid it.

If we understand how photosynthesis works in our forages we can take advantage of this knowledge and reduce our costs considerably. Furthermore, instead of harming soil life and the all-important mycorrhizae, we will be increasing the rate of photosynthesis and feeding more of the soil life that feeds plants in the natural world. Is it easy to see forests growing vigorously without any fertilizer, how does this happen? Easy, are they nourished thanks to the humus and the microorganisms in the soil, which in turn are fed by the high-energy exudates that the plants return to the soil for this.

I want to share with you what I have learned on my own farms so that you too can wean your land, which is a living organism, from chemical fertilizers. It can! I and my total shepherding students are proof of that.

What should we do? We must go back to the future! Understand how photosynthesis and microorganisms work so that instead of fighting and controlling nature we become part of it, stimulating it with low inputs. To increase the rate of photosynthesis in our forage we can do different things.

1. Carry out total grazing to increase the leaf-to-stem ratio.

As my students of total grazing already know, the leaves create energy through photosynthesis while the stems consume energy by respiration. So the more green leaves per square meter we can produce the more energy is captured by photosynthesis to feed our soil and soil life feeds our plants.

Do you want more green leaves per square meter? Stop selective rotational grazing and switch to a full grazing program, your farm, your cattle and your finances will thank you. Also, what feeds cattle better? The green leaf or the stem? The green leaf has 60% digestibility and a higher amount of protein while the stem only contains 30-40% digestibility.

2. If greater productivity is necessary or the life of the soil is poor due to the application of synthetic fertilizers, we can apply foliar fertilizer early in the morning when there are at least 4 leaves in our forage and at a low concentration so as not to burn the tender forage.

This should be done as early as possible as this is when the stomata or leaf pores are open. A good option may be about 5 kilos per hectare of a soluble/foliar fertilizer 20-20-20 with trace elements in enough water so that it does not burn the young leaves.

Remember that we are not trying to fertilize the soil but the leaf directly to increase the rate of photosynthesis and the plant feeds the microorganisms in the soil and these, in turn, feed the plant.

Your plants may get greener and grow faster, but more importantly, more humus will begin to form when these soil microorganisms turn into humus. We must know that this is the way in which up to 80% of the humus is formed in our soils and not by waste as was once believed. This knowledge is new, about 7 years to date.

3.  Use legumes in our fields.

As we already know, thanks to their symbiosis with certain bacteria that fix nitrogen from the air, legumes can produce part of the nitrogen required in our soils. Let us remember that the air we breathe contains 78% nitrogen. But that is not what legumes contribute most because there are bacteria in the soil that also provide nitrogen in a form available to plants. Legumes provide other types of high-energy exudates to soil microorganisms so that the improvement of our soils is faster. They also offer greater nutrition and dietary diversity for our cattle.

4. Gradually reduce the application of synthetic fertilizers.

Why not at once? Well, since by using synthetic fertilizers we become dependent or addicted to our soils with respect to that form of food (synthetic fertilizers applied to the soil) we must gradually prepare our soils to function on their own in a natural way. My recommendation is to cut it by half the first year, a quarter the second year, and completely remove it by the third year. You must apply the previously mentioned foliar fertilizer as many times as necessary in the transition.

Later you will see that it will no longer be necessary to apply the foliar fertilizer more than on a few occasions when more forage is required.

5. Rotate agriculture with livestock.

This has been done for centuries, doing only agriculture every year kills the life of the soil and more if the soil is left turned or plowed between harvests. On the other hand, by alternating agriculture with livestock, the regenerative effect of the livestock-grass-land symbiosis is used to increase the % of humus in the soil and after 4-6 years agriculture can be carried out for 2-3 years. This will depend on the type of soil.

This knowledge can be obtained from older books and it actually works.

Remember, he who seeks finds and he who asks the right questions gets the right answers. Let's improve our land, livestock and finances at the same time!

Esto es muy importante pues si seguimos aplicando fertilizantes sintéticos al suelo la planta no es alimentada de forma natural y los microorganismos del suelo alrededor de las raíces se vuelven flojos, por así decirlo, ¡y dejan de hacer su trabajo que es de hacer disponibles los nutrientes no disponibles del suelo!

La revolución verde y el combustible fósil barato hizo que los productores se olvidaran de los métodos tradicionales de producción con bajo insumos externos. La meta, paso de máxima rentabilidad a máxima productividad. ¿Que nos pasó? ¿Qué paso con el sentido común y de economía? ¿Como no nos dimos cuenta de que al aplicar fertilizantes sintéticos dañábamos nuestra tierra y su vida?

Ahora he aprendido y desaprendido, esto es lo que pasa cuando uno se gradúa de Ingeniero Agrónomo Zootecnista y se confronta con la realidad en el campo. Después de más de 30 años de experiencia les puedo afirmar que no es necesario el uso de fertilizantes sintéticos.

Solo debemos entender cómo funciona la simbiosis rumiante-pasto-tierra y manejar el pastoreo de nuestro ganado. Si alguna vez necesitamos acelerar este ciclo virtuoso lo podemos hacer y les voy a decir cómo.

Si quieres ganar plata y no ser víctima de lo que está pasando te recomiendo que escuches con atención.

Debes saber que si dejas de aplicar fertilizantes sintéticos sin tomar ninguna otra medida tus campos se van a volver amarillos por la falta de vida en el suelo. ¿Como se esto? ¡Me paso a mí! Cuando vi que los fertilizantes sintéticos, allá por 1991, dañaban la vida del suelo, dejé de usarlos y mis campos, que ya estaban adictos a los fertilizantes sintéticos, se volvieron amarillo y bajo mucho la productividad por tres años. No quiero que te pase eso y por eso es por lo que te voy a dar la manera de evitarlo.

Si entendemos cómo funciona la fotosíntesis en nuestros forrajes podemos aprovechar este conocimiento y reducir nuestros costos considerablemente. Además, en lugar de dañar la vida del suelo y la tan importante micorriza estaremos aumentando la tasa de fotosíntesis y alimentando en mayor proporción la vida del suelo la cual es la que alimenta a las plantas en el mundo natural. ¿Es fácil observar bosques creciendo con vigor sin ningún fertilizante, como sucede esto? ¿Fácil, se nutren gracias al humus y a los microorganismos del suelo que a la vez son alimentados por los exudados altos en energía que las plantas regresan al suelo para esto mismo?

Les quiero compartir lo que he aprendido en mis propias fincas para que ustedes también logren destetar sus tierras, que son un organismo vivo, de los fertilizantes químicos. ¡Se puede! Yo y mis estudiantes de pastoreo total somos prueba de ello.

¿Qué debemos de hacer? ¡Debemos regresar al futuro! Entender cómo funciona la fotosíntesis y los microorganismos para que en vez de luchar y controlar a la naturaleza seamos parte de ella estimulándola con bajos insumos.

Para aumentar la tasa de fotosíntesis en nuestro forraje podemos hacer estas cosas.

1. Realizar un pastoreo total para aumentar la relación hoja a tallo pues como ya lo saben mis estudiantes de pastoreo total, las hojas crean energía por medio de la fotosíntesis mientras los tallos consumen energía por respiración. Entonces mientras más hojas verdes por metro cuadrado podamos producir más energía se captura por fotosíntesis para alimentar nuestro suelo y la vida del suelo alimenta a nuestras plantas.

Quieres más hojas verdes por metro cuadrado? Deja de hacer pastoreo rotacional selectivo y cambia al programa de pastoreo total, tu finca, tu ganado y tus finanzas te lo agradecerán. Además, ¿que alimenta mejor al ganado? ¿La hoja verde o el tallo? La hoja verde tiene un 60% de digestibilidad y mayor cantidad de proteínas mientras el tallo solo contiene un 30-40% de digestibilidad.

2. Si es necesario mayor productividad o la vida del suelo es pobre por tanta aplicación de fertilizantes sintéticos podemos aplicar fertilizante foliar temprano en la mañana cuando haya por lo menos 4 hojas en nuestros forrajes y a una baja concentración para no quemar el forraje tierno. Esto debe hacerse lo más temprano posible pues es cuando los estomas o poros de la hoja están abiertos. Una buena opción puede ser unos 5 kilos por hectárea de un fertilizante soluble/foliar 20-20-20 con elementos traza en suficiente agua para que no queme las hojas tiernas.

Recuerde que no tratamos de fertilizar el suelo sino a la hoja directamente para aumentar la tasa de fotosíntesis y la planta alimente a los microorganismos del suelo y estos a su vez alimenten a la planta.

Sus plantas podrán volverse más verdes y crecerán más rápido, pero lo más importante es que se empezara a formar más humus cuando estos microorganismos del suelo se conviertan en humus. Debemos saber que esta es la manera que se forma hasta un 80% del humus en nuestros suelos y no por residuos como antiguamente se creía. Este conocimiento es nuevo, de unos 7 años a la fecha.

3. Usar leguminosas en nuestros campos

Como ya sabemos, las leguminosas pueden gracias a su simbiosis con ciertas bacterias que fijan el nitrógeno del aire, producir una parte del nitrógeno que se requiere en nuestros suelos, recordemos que el aire que respiramos contiene un 78% de nitrógeno. Pero eso no es lo que más aportan las leguminosas pues hay bacterias en el suelo que también aportan nitrógeno en forma disponible para las plantas. Las leguminosas aportan otros tipos de exudados altos en energía a los microorganismos del suelo para que la mejora de nuestros suelos sea más rápida. También ofrecen una mayor nutrición y diversidad en la dieta para nuestro ganado.

4. Bajar gradualmente la aplicación de fertilizantes sintéticos.

¿Porque no de una vez? Bueno, debido a que al usar fertilizantes sintéticos volvemos dependientes o adictos a nuestros suelos con respecto a esa forma de alimentación (fertilizantes sintéticos aplicados al suelo) debemos ir gradualmente preparando a nuestros suelos para funcionar por sí mismo de manera natural. Mi recomendación es bajar a la mitad el primer año, la cuarta parte el segundo año, y quitarlo totalmente el tercer año. Debe aplicar el fertilizante foliar previamente mencionado las veces que sea necesario en la transición.

Después vera que ya no será necesario aplicar el fertilizante foliar más que en contadas ocasiones cuando se requiera de mayor forraje.

5. Rotar la agricultura con la ganadería

Así se había hecho por siglos, el hacer solo agricultura todos los años mata la vida del suelo y más si se deja el suelo volteado o arado entre cosechas. En cambio, al alternar la agricultura con la ganadería se aprovecha el efecto regenerador de la simbiosis ganado-hierba-tierra para aumentar el % de humus en los suelos y después de 4-6 años se puede hacer agricultura 2-3 años. Esto va a depender del tipo de suelos.

Este conocimiento se puede obtener de libros más antiguos y funciona en realidad. 

Recuerda, el que busca encuentra y el que hace las preguntas correctas obtiene las respuestas correctas. ¡Mejoremos nuestras tierras, ganado y finanzas al mismo tiempo!
