Hello, good morning! I hope you are well and enjoying this day and the new opportunities that God gives us
I would like to remind you that we, cattlemen and cattlewomen, those who manage land and livestock, are called to be good stewards.
But what does it mean that we are called to be good stewards? Stewardship refers to managing all the different parts of something, in this case, a livestock business that consists of land, livestock, people, pastures, soil microorganisms, trees, wildlife, insects, and our family.
So we want all of this to improve, not just the land or the pastures, not just our profitability, we want EVERYTHING to improve and to be able to leave to our descendants something better than what we received, our legacy.
Surely you have seen many examples of stewardship, people who buy or inherit a farm and improve it in such a way that it is now an example of how things should be done, a profitable farm in harmony with the environment, with adapted livestock, calving in the right time, with very high productivity and without depending on external inputs. Surely such farms will have trees in their pastures.
You have also surely seen some bad examples, where the soil and pastures have been degraded due to poor management, perhaps this was due to overgrazing, overgrazing is what happens when livestock are allowed to consume grass before it has adequately recovered and is what causes your best grasses to disappear. from the pasture your most desirable grassy species. Then long-lived organic carbon in the soil begins to be lost and productivity declines to the bare minimum. That example is one, another would be where the land has been routinely plowed and chemicals such as fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides are used in excess as well; This kills soil life and drastically reduces its natural functions.
We know that in nature, the soil and the grasses and the trees form a symbiosis where the grasses properly pruned by livestock create fertile soil. We know that the best soils in the world were created by large herds of herbivores grazing forage species and because grasses store energy in crowns and roots, below the ground, they create deep, fertile soil while trees store energy in their wood which can burn or be cut and carried away. Forests do not create the best soils in the world, only grasslands. Interesting right?
Well, I must also say, to the pride of us ranchers, that grass produces more oxygen per square yard of land than trees. Yes, with only 4 x 4 yards of green grass, enough oxygen is produced for one person. So we know that with properly managed pastures and livestock, we can improve the environment for EVERYONE.
These latest data should make you feel great and optimistic.
Now, we know that the profitability of a farm is important to be able to have what is necessary for our family and to continue regenerating the land. Did you know that the number of livestock in good body condition that you can maintain on your farm at a low cost determines your profitability? Yes, the more pounds of calves, and beef, you sell per year at a low cost, the greater your profit will be, what you keep at the end of each year.
Isn't weaning weight as important? The price paid per pound of calf?
In reality, those do not match a high stocking rate in terms of its importance in determining the profitability of your farm.
And just as a high stocking rate is decisive for the profitability of your farm, real-life fertility determines the profit that each cow gives you per year.
Here we are already defining what you should focus on to regenerate the land and be a good steward of your farm in all of its parts. Of course, there are other parts that influence your success but the most important are these:
I teach all this at the Total Grazing Academy because it is not just one or two things that we must consider but rather we must consider the ALL in its parts that influences how nature selects and manages to achieve the highest productivity per acre. When we do not contradict nature, we begin to simplify our lives and we also start to harvest in abundance the results of our efforts.

Somos llamados a ser mayordomos de la tierra
Hola, buenos días! Espero qué estes bien y disfrutando de esté día y de las nuevas oportunidades qué nos da Dios.
Me gustaria recordarte qué nosotros, los qué manejamos tierra y ganado somos llamados a ser buenos mayordomos.
Pero qué quiere decir qué somos llamados a ser buenos mayordomos? La mayordomia se refiere a administrar de tal manera qué todas las partes de algo, en esté caso un negocio ganadero qué consta de tierra, ganado, gente, pastos, microorganismos del suelo, arboles, fauna silvestre, insectos y nuestra familia.
Entonces queremos qué todo esto mejore, no sólo la tierra o los pastos, no sólo nuestra rentabilidad, queremos qué TODO mejore y poder entregar a nuestra descendencia algo mejor qué lo qué recibimos, nuestro legado.
Seguro has visto muchos ejemplos de mayordomia, gente qué compro o heredo una finca y la mejoro de manera qué ahora es un ejemplo de cómo se deben de hacer las cosas, una finca rentable en armonia con el medio ambiente, con ganado adaptado, pariendo en la época correcta, con muy alta productividad y sin depender de insumos externos. De seguro tales fincas tendrán arboles en sus potreros.
También de seguro has visto malos ejemplos, en dónde el suelo y los pastos han sido degradados por mal manejo, tal vez haya sido por sobrepastoreo qué sucede cuando se permite al ganado consumir pasto cuando no se ha recuperado y esto es lo qué provoca qué desaparezcan del potrero tus especies de pastoso más deseables. Entonces se empieza a perder el carbono organico de larga vida en el suelo y la productividad declina hasta lo minimo. Ese ejemplo es uno, otro seria en dónde se ha labrado la tierra en exceso y usado quimicos cómo fertilizantes, insecticidas, herbicidas y fungicidas en exceso también; esto aniquila la vida del suelo y reduce drasticamente sus funciones naturales. Sabemos qué en la naturaleza el suelo y los pastos y arboles forman una simbiosis en dónde los pastos podados adecuadamente por el ganado crean suelo fertil. Sabemos qué los mejores suelos del mundo fueron creados por grandes manadas de herbivoros pastando las especies forrajeras y debido a qué los pastos almacenan energía en macollos y raíces, debajo del suelo, crean un suelo fertil y profundo mientras los arboles qué almacenan energía en su madera no crean los mejores suelos del mundo. Interesante verdad?
Bueno también debo decir, para orgullo de nosotros los ganaderos, qué el pasto produce más oxígeno por metro cuadrado de tierra qué los arboles. Si, con sólo 4 x4 metros de pasto verde se produce el suficiente oxígeno para una persona. Entonces sabemos qué con pastos y ganado adecuadamente manejado podemos mejorar el medio ambiente para TODOS
Estos últimos datos te deben de hacer sentir muy bien y optimista.
Ahora, sabemos qué la rentabilidad de una finca es importante para poder tener lo necesario para nuestra familia y poder seguir regenerando la tierra. Sabías qué la cantidad de ganado en buenas carnes qué puedas mantener por año en tu finca a bajo costo determina tu rentabilidad? Si, mientras más ventas de kilos de becerro, litros de leche, tengas por año a bajo costo, mayor será tu utilidad, lo qué te queda al final de cada año.
Qué no es tan importante el peso al destete?, el precio por kilo de becerro? En realidad no le llegan a la alta carga animal en cuanto a su importancia respecto a la rentabilidad de tu finca
Y así cómo la alta carga animal es determinante para la rentabilidad de tu finca, la fertilidad a campo determina la utilidad qué te deja cada vaca por año.
Aquí ya estamos definiendo en lo qué nos debemos de enfocar para lograr regenerar la tierra y ser buenos mayordomos de nuestra finca en todas sus partes. Claro qué hay otras partes qué influyen en nuestro éxito pero las más importantes son estás:
Todo esto lo enseño en la Academia de Pastoreo Total pues no es sólo una o dos cosas qué debemos de considerar si no qué debemos de considerar el TODO qué influye en cómo la naturaleza selecciona y logra la mayor productividad por hectárea. Cuando no contradecimos a la naturaleza empezamos a facilitar y simplificar nuestra vida y también empezamos a cosechar en abundancia los resultados de nuestros esfuerzos.
Por eso he hablado de en dónde debemos enfocar nuestros esfuerzos para lograr el éxito. Muchas veces diluimos nuestra atencion y nuestra inversion en dinero en cosas qué no nos van a llevar al éxito más rápido. De hecho, muchas de esas cosas van a impedir qué logremos una mayor rentabilidad.
Cosas cómo:
Todo esto nos distrae del enfoque necesario para lograr ser excelentes mayordomos de nuestra finca: Lograr el mayor número de ganado en buenas carnes a bajo costo y tener vacas con altar fertilidad a campo.

Ahi veras qué yo también empece sin saber muchas cosas y a través de los anios aprendí lo qué es realmente necesario para lograr ser un buen mayordomo de mi finca, de seguro te vas a identificar con mi experiencia y lo qué aprendí en estos 30 anios.

Al saber cómo funciona el rumen al pastorear podrás reducir grandemente tus gastos en medicina veterinaria y lograr un mejor desempeño en tu ganado, esté mejor desempeño viene de lograr la salud animal óptima y ese mejor desempeño te dará una mejor conversión de las toneladas de pasto qué produces a productos vendibles de tu ganado, qué puede ser kilos de becerro, kilos de aumento o litros de leche

Una temporada de no más de 45 días de partos en la mejor época del año te permite lograr una mayor cantidad de vacas en buenas carnes por finca, y además te permite reducir tus costos al reducir sus necesidades en la época seca o fría del año. También te ayuda a aumentar la fertilidad a campo de tus vacas pues está depende de la condición corporal de tus vacas AL PARTO.
Bueno, ahi lo tienes. Es bastante sencillo lo qué debemos de hacer para ser buenos mayordomos de nuestra tierra. Sólo es necesario la voluntad para serlo, y se empieza por abrir la mente a nuevas posibilidades y aprendizaje.
