#121 Biochar and its Benefits | El biocarbon y sus beneficios

Hello, how are you? I hope you are well and happy because today I am going to talk to you about a super interesting topic.

Would you like to have healthier livestock? More productive? With less spending on mineral supplements?

Would you like your soil to increase its long-lived organic carbon content to retain more moisture and nutrients that it later releases for your forage plants?

Would you like achieving this to be easy and low-cost?

Well, today I am going to talk to you about a strategy that works at a very low-cost and you will be able to obtain: healthier livestock, with a better conversion efficiency, that is, more kilos of meat per ton of grass, you will improve your land faster with this simple practice.

Have you heard of activated charcoal?

It is charcoal made at very high temperatures and in the absence of oxygen, it is a charcoal that was once used by our grandmothers to cure stomach ailments and they still use it in hospitals in their emergency centers to save people who have consumed poison because this charcoal inactivates the poison.

Many tests have been done for years in various parts of the world, and in Europe, it is already common practice to offer cattle a little biochar or activated carbon and the results have been surprising.

Now, you have to make sure that it is biochar made at very high temperatures and not charcoal like that is used to make barbecue, it should not contain uncharred wood and it should be well done.

Well, now that you have good biochar, you tamp it down so that the pieces are no more than 2 cm long and you offer it to your cattle. You will notice that they rarely consume much of it because it should not taste very good, but you can add a little molasses diluted in water so that they consume what they want, which according to tests done in Europe is about 80 grams per cow per day.

I have done it, with amazing results in health, better performance, and a shine in the animals' fur that I had not seen before. Also, mineral consumption dropped by half. This means that the animal feels better and when they feel better, they are easier to handle.

Now, why does biochar work?

The theory is that it provides a place where rumen microbes can live and reproduce to digest the grass fiber faster once the grass enters the rumen. In short, biochar provides a home for these fiber-digesting microorganisms.

Remember that grass fiber is only digested in the rumen since it passes into the other digestive compartments, the fiber is no longer digested and comes out in the manure. Well, if that's what biochar does in the rumen, what will biochar do in the manure?

This is where it gets interesting: biochar is loaded with microbes and nutrients in the cow's rumen and when it comes out in the manure, if you're not using poisons or dewormers, the dung beetles bury it in your soil where the biochar continues to help trap long-lived organic carbon from the air into your soil.

And how long does biochar last in your soil and improve it? More than a thousand years!

According to tests done in Australia they have seen how the productivity of the grass without fertilizers improves after a few years of giving biochar to the cows, and also with fatter cows and less expense.

In that case, soil fertility will increase faster due to the recycling of nutrients and the dispersion of biochar throughout the farm in every square meter.

Hola, cómo estás? Espero qué bien y feliz porque hoy te voy a hablar de un tema super interesante

Te gustaria tener ganado más sano? Más productivo? Con menor gasto en suplemento mineral?

Te gustaria qué tu suelo aumentara en su contenido de carbono organico de larga vida para retener más humedad y nutrientes qué después libere para tus plantas forrajeras?

Te gustaria qué el lograr esto fuera fácil y de bajo costo?

Bueno, hoy te voy a hablar de una estrategia qué funciona a muy bajo costo y podrás obtener: ganado más sano, con una mejor eficiencia de conversión o sea más kilos de carne por tonelada de pasto, mejoraras tu tierra más rápido con está sencilla practica.

Has oido del carbon vegetal activado? Es carbon vegetal hecho a temperaturas muy altas y en ausencia de oxígeno, es un carbon qué antaño se usaba por nuestras abuelas para curar malestares estomacales y aún lo usan en los hospitales en sus centrales de emergencia para salvar gente qué ha consumido veneno pues esté carbon inactiva el veneno.

Se han hecho muchas pruebas por anios en varias partes del mundo, y en Europa ya es practica comun, de ofrecer al ganado un poco de biocarbon o carbon activado y los resultados han sido sorprendentes.

Ahora, te tienes qué cerciorar qué sea biocarbon hecho a muy altas temperaturas y no carbon vegetal qué se usa para hacer un asado, no debe contener madera sin carbonizar y debe estar bien hecho.

Bueno, ya qué tienes un buen bio carbon, lo apisonas para qué los trozos no sean más de 2 cms de largo y lo ofreces a tu ganado. Te vas a dar cuenta qué casi nunca lo consumen mucho pues no ha de saber muy bueno, pero le puedes agregar un poco de melaza diluida en agua para qué consumas lo qué quieres qué segun pruebas hechas en Europa es unos 80 gramos por vaca  por día.

Lo he hecho, con resultados asombrosos en salud, mejor desempeño y un brillo en el pelaje de los animales qué no había visto antes. También el consumo de minerales bajo a la mitad.

Esto quiere decir qué el animal se siente mejor y al sentirse mejor es más fácil manejarlo.

Ahora, porque funciona el biocarbon? La teoria es qué proporciona un sitio en dónde los microbios del rumen pueden habitar y reproducirse para lograr digerir la fibra del pasto más rápido una vez entra el pasto al rumen. En pocas palabras, el biocarbon proporciona un hogar para estos microorganismos qué digierne la fibra. 

Recuerda qué la fibra del pasto sólo es digerida en el rumen, ya qué pasa a los otros compartimentos digestivos, ya no se digiere la fibra y sale en el estiércol.

Bueno, si eso hace el biocarbon en el rumen, qué hara el biocarbon en el estiércol?

Aquí es dónde se pone interesante: el biocarbon se carga de microbios y nutrientes en el rumen de la vaca y cuando sale en el estiércol, si no estás usando venenos o desparasitantes, los escarabajos estercoleros lo entierran en tu suelo en dónde el biocarbon sigue ayudando a atrapar carbon organico de larga vida del aire a tu suelo.

Y cuanto tiempo dura el biocarbon en tus suelos mejorandolos? Más de mil anios!

Segun pruebas hechas en Australia han visto cómo mejora la productividad del pasto sin fertilizantes después de unos anios de dar biocarbon a las vacas, y además con vacas más gordas y menos gasto

• Cuando el biocarbon pasa por el tracto digestivo de la vaca se carga de nutrientes y microbios qué cuando sale en el estiércol, los escarabajos estercoleros lo entierran a profundidad en el suelo dónde sigue haciendo bien por hasta unos mil anios 
• No debemos preocuparnos de qué el biocarbon fije e inutilice los nutrientes pues sólo estamos dando 80 gramos por vaca por día. Esto significa qué en una animal qué pesa 400-500 kilos es una cantidad mucho muy pequeña 
• Si se complementa el programa de pastoreo total con el biocarbon a las vacas se aumentara la fertilidad del suelo más rápido por el reciclaje de nutrientes y la dispersion del biocarbon por toda la finca en cada metro cuadrado.
